Solar presents “Fanfare 2025” by Priscila Fernandes
From September 20th to November 8th, Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery presents “Fanfare 2025,” the latest work by Priscila Fernandes, accompanied by a program of screenings, talks, and activities that establish a dialogue between cinema, music, and social criticism.
Inspired by the iconic film "Fanfare" (1958) by Bert Haanstra, Priscila Fernandes’ new video work transposes the plot and cinematic language of the original production into a contemporary setting. While Haanstra’s film portrayed post-war Holland as an idealised image of community and tradition, Fanfare 2025 places this landscape in direct dialogue with the anxieties and transformations of today.
The fictional village of Lagerwiede — a symbol of idyllic Holland, with its canals, meadows, and picturesque bridges — retains its untouched charm. Yet new elements subtly emerge: home deliveries by boat, tourists on stand-up paddle boards gliding toward the sunset, and a conversation between past and present that is both nostalgic and critical.
Approximately 20 minutes in length, "Fanfare 2025" features the musicians of De Bergklanken orchestra and is supported by Mondriaan Fonds, Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery, Batalha Centro de Cinema, and the Circular Festival de Artes Performativas.
Exhibition at Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery
Solar presents "Fanfare 2025" as a multi-channel installation, with scenes distributed across different rooms in a choreographed and synchronised arrangement. The exhibition also includes the storyboard and research materials, inviting visitors to revisit a shared imaginary of the past in order to reflect on the present.
Opening: September 20th, 5:00 PM
On view until: November, 8th, 6:00 PM
Premiere at Batalha Centro de Cinema
At the Batalha Cinema, on September 18th at 9:15 PM, the film will have its premiere, followed by a conversation with the artist, Mário Micaelo, and researcher Andrew Snyder. Admission is free, with tickets available on the day (maximum two per person).
Performative conversation at the Circular Festival
As part of the Circular Festival de Artes Performativas, on September 20th at 6:00 PM, Priscila Fernandes will join the musicians of De Bergklanken Orchestra for a public performative conversation. Through shared stories and reflections, the discussion will explore themes such as folklore, identity, and rural life. Founded 70 years ago, this Dutch wind orchestra is composed of 47 amateur musicians, represented on this occasion by Jacoby Bos, Willemiek Nijdam, and Harm Nijdam. The event takes place at Solar, with free admission.
