Filmmaker and visual artist Priscila Fernandes recently completed shooting “Fanfare 2025” (working title), her latest film creation, inspired by Bert Haanstra's iconic “Fanfare” (1958).

The new piece reinterprets the Dutch classic, weaving a dialogue between Haanstra's vision of post-war Holland and present-day concerns, in a portrait that combines humor, dystopia, and social criticism.

As in the original film, the action takes place in the fictional village of Lagerwiede, but while Haanstra envisioned a community united and in harmony with nature, Fernandes updates the setting to an ecologically threatened landscape, riddled with political tensions and the growing polarization of society. In its plot, a local philharmonic orchestra, instead of overcoming its differences to win a national competition, sinks into internal conflicts and delays, ending up competing in the contest—now submerged in a lake—with water up to their knees and before a blindfolded jury.

The premiere of “Fanfare 2025” will take place in two separate presentations: at Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery, as a multi-channel installation, with scenes distributed across different rooms in a choreographed and synchronized manner, accompanied by the storyboard and research material; and at Batalha Centro de Cinema, in a version adapted for a single channel, projected on a large LED screen. Among the documentary elements on display may be research on militant philharmonic bands in Europe, carried out in the context of the project.

Priscila Fernandes also proposed the screening of Bert Haanstra's original film “Fanfare,” in collaboration with Solar and its partners, Circular Festival de Artes Performativas and Batalha Centro de Cinema, bridging the past, that serve as the foundation for this new work, and the present.
