The new languages of Igor Jesus in 'Ponto-Zero', at Solar in December
Solar presents 'Ponto-Zero', by Igor Jesus, a universe of screenings, modular synthesizers, kaleidoscopic lenses and other techniques that allow the control of light, to subvert and transform images and sounds. The result is a kind of score of sounds, which generates a set of new audio and visual environments, in a dialectic similar to that of a game board.
There is a theory that the artificial intelligence used by the Google Translate algorithms initially assumed English as the zero-point in the translation of the two languages. But after a while it would create its own language, completely unknown to humans, and replace English at that zero-point. The machine had created a proto-language, a bridge-language, capable of harmonizing and annulling human linguistic barriers.
Ponto-Zero, de Igor Jesus, has its starting point in the search for a common language in two different plastic languages: the photographic work of Daniela Ângelo and the engraving work of Rita Ferreira. Works that are appropriated and submitted to a set of systems that, while preserving what are the idiosyncratic qualities of each, act as a filter that blurs the linguistic boundaries that distance them, to find a point of fusion. With the use of prisms, kaleidoscopic lenses, and the subversion of laboratory protocols, the light from the photographs is geometrized and decomposed into new photographs that suggest game boards made of exotic woods, but that are, in fact, matrices of a score capable of producing a blackout in the exhibition.
The exhibition is organized by Curtas Metragens CRL, as part of the programming of Solar – Cinematic Art Galley, with the support of Vila do Conde Municipality and the Direção-Geral das Artes.
