Ana Vaz: the art of the (in)visible
The filmography of artist and filmmaker Ana Vaz activates and questions cinema as an art of the (in)visible and an instrument capable of transforming human perception, expanding its connections and becoming with other forms of life.
Ana Vaz's film poems are distinguished by their continual experimental challenge to the poetic forms of contemporary cinema, which serves to illuminate the profound contradictions of our time and to question the destructive practices of colonial modernity.
Ana Vaz's affiliation with Curtas Metragens CRL was characterized by the inclusion of two of her films in the Experimental Competition of Curtas Vila do Conde - International Film Festival: "Entre Temps" in 2013, and "Há Terra!" in 2016. These points of contact laid the groundwork for an expansive new project, centered around the original exhibition "What Happened is Still to Come," with its core consisting of her film poem series. This exhibition dissects the second and new episode of the film poems, in which a sci-fi ethnography of various European capitals is interwoven as agents of colonial thought. The cities themselves are portrayed as hallucinations, unveiling that which appears to be absent but pervades everything: the colonial past and impending future catastrophes. Past and future, narratives and omens intricately coalesce under the prismatic scrutiny of individuals such as Isabel Carvalho, Maïa Tellit Hawad, and Olivier Marboeuf.
The inaugural chapter was commissioned and displayed at the 24th contemporary art prize of the Pernod Ricard Foundation in Paris in 2023. Galeria Solar, in collaboration with Batalha Centro de Cinema, will present this new chapter, focusing on the city of Porto, through synchronized moving image installations, expansive audio works, and research documents that disassemble this latest cinematic creation in an exhibition context.
Simultaneously, in partnership with the Circular Festival of Performing Arts, this initiative will extend to the Vila do Conde Municipal Theatre. The presentation will encompass not only a performance led by the artist – or, more precisely, by her voice – but also screenings of her films "Occidente," "Há Terra!," "Apiyemiyeki?," and "A Idade da Pedra." At the Cinema Batalha, audiences will have the opportunity to view the short film "Meteoro" and attend a performance discussion promising to summon the diverse discourses underpinning this film series.
