Miranda Pennell Presents Her First Exhibition in Portugal at Solar

From July 18th to August 29th 2026, Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery, in Vila do Conde, presents H is for History N is for Now, the first exhibition in Portugal by British artist and filmmaker Miranda Pennell. Developed in collaboration with Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival, the exhibition brings together a series of installations and moving-image works, including previously unseen pieces, offering a reflection on memory, archives, and the legacies of colonialism.
Internationally recognised for her work across experimental cinema, documentary, and installation art, Miranda Pennell has developed an artistic practice that investigates how history is constructed through images, narratives, and silences. Drawing on photographic, cinematic, and institutional archives, her films interrogate the visual and narrative frameworks shaped by colonialism, revealing the power structures and mechanisms of violence embedded within official images and historical accounts. Through meticulous research and editing, Pennell transforms the archive into a site of critical inquiry, where past and present remain in constant dialogue.
H is for History N is for Now offers an overview of Pennell's recent work, inviting visitors to revisit episodes of British colonial history and consider their continuing impact on the present. Situated between essay film, audiovisual installation, and historical research, the works on display explore questions of collective memory, representation, and the enduring legacy of colonial structures in contemporary society.
Alongside the exhibition, 34th Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival will present a complete retrospective of the filmmaker's work from July 18th to 23rd at the Vila do Conde Municipal Theatre. The programme includes Pennell's major films as well as Cartes Blanches selection featuring works by filmmakers who have influenced her artistic practice.
The joint programme also includes the exhibition opening on July 18th at 4:30 pm at Solar; two guided tours of the exhibition led by the artist on July 22nd at 4:00 pm; and Gestures of Love and Violence, a lecture-performance presented by Miranda Pennell at the Vila do Conde Municipal Theatre on 24 July, bringing the programme dedicated to the artist to a close.
