April Conversations during the month of May
Solar - Cinematic Art Gallery is proposing a series of themed initiatives to celebrate half-century of democracy. As a part of this celebration, they have come up with April Conversations which will now be held in May at the Loja das Curtas Bookshop.
Loja das Curtas will host a series of talks starting on May 4th at 4pm. The first session will begin with a presentation of the book O Guardião da Constituição (The Guardian of the Constitution) published by the Constitutional Court, with text by Isabel Minhós Martins and illustrations by Yara Kono. The talk will focus on how to safeguard the achievements of the Carnation Revolution and the 1976 Constitution of the Portuguese Republic in this new era. The speakers, Isabel Minhós Martins and Joana Riquito, will discuss the arduous task of being the guardian of the Constitution in the current generation, which faces a climate of uncertainty and growing anti-democratic ideological tendencies.
On May 11th at 5pm, Margarida Ribeiro, Mafalda Martins, Tânia Dinis, and Mariana Sardon will present the project SEMPRE, histórias de liberdade (ALWAYS, freedom tales) based on the exploration of archives and personal collections gathered from those who lived through the revolution in Vila do Conde. The multidisciplinary artistic project will be demonstrated on May 1st at 9:30 pm in the Vila do Conde Municipal Market, with an extension on October 19th as an exhibition, publication, and cassette. The speakers will discuss rethinking history and the importance of the project.
Artist Tânia Dinis will present her project Álbuns de Guerra (War Albums) on May 18th at 4.30pm. The interpretive project was born from the images and memories shared by women from the Vale do Ave area who, during their military service, exchanged photographs, aerogrammes, and letters with their loved ones. The project, co-produced by Teatro Oficina and Associação Cultural Tenda de Saias, has been in circulation in different parts of the country, such as Casa da Memória, the International Congress of Photography and History, and TAGV - Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente.
On May 25th at 4pm, a talk entitled A Greve na Pesca do Bacalhau (The Cod Fishing Strike) will take place. The talk will be moderated by Abel Coentrão, and the participation of three exceptional guests: Celestino São Roque, António de Sousa Oliveira, and Carlos Marques Fernandes. Their presence at the talk will be essential to revive memories of their time in the cod fishery and, above all, of the spring of 1974, when they lived through the Carnation Revolution thousands of kilometers from Portugal. That year, a strike by the crews of Portuguese ships in St John of Newfoundland, Canada, dictated the end of the mythical line fishing with one-man boats.
