ANIMAR 21 dedicates its new edition to Animated Cinema

The 21st edition of ANIMAR begins on March 7th, 2026, with a program entirely dedicated to animation films. As in previous editions, Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery offers a look at some of the most relevant and most contemporary Portuguese productions.
The exhibition draws its inspiration from the short films “Because Today is Saturday” by Alice Eça Guimarães; “Percebes” by Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves; “Dog Alone” by Marta Reis Andrade; and “Amarelo Banana” by Alexandre Sousa, also including a display of interactive objects from the Clia Anilupa studio.
Organized as an installation, the exhibition runs parallel to the films, presenting life-size recreations, interactive devices, and experimental proposals that invite the public to enter the universe of the works. Beyond the enjoyment of the pieces, the exhibition reveals the creative process behind the films, displaying materials and objects that were fundamental to their conception.
In three distinct rooms, objects from Clia Anilupa — an animation studio with 35 years of activity — will be on display, allowing the public to explore optical toys and historical devices related to moving images, understanding the technical principles and visual illusions that underpin the cinematic language.
The ANIMAR 21 program also includes guided tours, thematic workshops, and film screenings, as well as parallel activities taking place at Solar, the Vila do Conde Municipal Theatre, and schools.
Maintaining its strong educational focus, ANIMAR 21 also presents a specific program for school audiences, with film screenings adapted to different age groups — ANIMAR FOR SCHOOLS. The objective is to combine entertainment and education, promoting visual literacy and contact with new cinematic languages. Sessions may take place at the Municipal Theatre, the Solar cinema, or the schools themselves.
Promoted by Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery and run by the Curtas Metragens CRL's Educational Service, the ANIMAR project proposes participatory methodologies that encourage learning through experience, image decoding, and the mobilisation of transversal knowledge, stimulating imagination through the principle of learning through play.
