Pós-Laboratórios de Verão is the result of the 10th edition of the Laboratórios de Verão Artistic Creation Support Programme, following a partnership between gnration (Braga), CIAJG - Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (Guimarães) and Solar – Galeria de Arte Cinemática (Vila do Conde). This year, after an open call to artists and collectives from the District of Braga and the Municipality of Vila do Conde, four proposals of different natures and aesthetic horizons were chosen to create their projects during residency periods at the participating institutions this summer.
The third and last iteration of Pós-Laboratórios de Verão is currently taking place at the Municipal Auditorium of Vila do Conde, following the exhibitions at gnration and CIAJG, which were inaugurated in September and October 2024, respectively.
In Vila do Conde, we can again see the project of Sally Santiago, the duos Sofia Morim + Filipe Carvalho and Francisca Miranda + Inês Leal, as well as the group including João Carlos Pinto, João Miguel Braga Simões and José Diogo Martins, all of them adapting and, at times, significantly transforming from their previous format to respond to the spatial configuration of this new venue while in continuity with the experimental nature of Laboratórios de Verão.
Sally Santiago presents Crónicas visuais de onde não estive, an audiovisual installation that speculates on the nature of given fictional and narrative places, through personal memories transmitted to the artist and their (re)creation into (new) memories that come to occupy and renew them. Sofia Morim and Filipe Carvalho show the installation Consonâncias Efémeras, a meditation on water and its relational capacity while enhancing the visitor's sensitive experience through contact with liquid surfaces and flows. For their turn, working between cinema and video art, Francisca Miranda and Inês Leal critically evoke the screen and TV broadcast in their installation Ouroboros, addressing soundbite and its relationship with popular proverbs, images, rituals and sounds of different origins. Finally, on the opening night, musicians João Carlos Pinto and José Diogo Martins recreate their performance +/-, using the piano and sound manipulation technology to explore collective archetypes in the form of sonic and visual atmospheres that catalyses the audience into uterine and psychedelic states.
Even though featuring heterogeneous attitudes, materialities and scope of interests, all these projects are united through their ability to counteract the rigidity and usual expectations of certain artistic disciplines and media structures, but also given symbolic territories, unfolding into zones of sensible kinship while prompt to resonate with one’s body and subjectivity. This way, the presented pieces open up as spaces for freely activating emotions, where spontaneous associations or tensions with other images, gestures, and ideas can also exist, following an individual and distinct path, as a result of one’s engagement with each work. An experience between recognition and otherness, but also between exercises of the imagination and sensations of wonder.
