Do we ever truly arrive?
Isadora Neves Marques
Between writing, cinema and artistic practice, Isadora Neves Marques critically reflects on pressing subjects in contemporary thought through her own language of (auto)fiction. The artist traces the fabric of her work by articulating issues of gender identity, sexuality and reproduction, with reflections on the fluidity and malleability of the body, both human and non-human, while exploring the potential and disquiet of biotechnology and sharing concerns rooted in the increasingly accentuated ecological crisis.
Neves Marques works a speculative science fiction framework whose verisimilitude of the hypotheses and concreteness of the urgent scenarios it deals with pushes us towards the real. Underlined by political overtones and sociological exercises, her works sheds lights on blind spots that reality fails to illuminate.
The filmmaker's collaboration with Curtas Metragens CRL has resulted in two past projects. On the one hand, the film Semente exterminadora (2017), directed by Neves Marques and produced by the Curtas cooperative, which was presented at the Tate Modern in London as part of the "TABOO AND TOTEM" program. In recent years, this has unfolded into a set of new videographic pieces, under the title YWY, which were developed out of the footage material shot for the film. On the other hand, Neves Marques was part of the group exhibition "Terra", held in 2017 at Galeria Solar, featuring her work Aprender a viver com o Inimigo. This piece ended up naming the artist's solo exhibition, which was shown at the Museu Coleção Berardo in 2017 along other new film and video productions.
Isadora Neves Marques is collaborating with Curtas Metragens CRL for the third time, resulting in her first solo exhibition in the north of the country, "Do we ever truly arrive?". Intimate and insightful, this body of work brings together four of the artist's pieces, two of which feature HAUT, an artist and composer who will occupy the Cave space.
