Pedro & rock'n'roll

Patti Smith saw a Picasso on a museum visit with her father and understood what art was all about.

You can't help but respect someone who foregoes a conventionalised career to immerse herself in a world that would not be her own.

Engineer some say. It seemed hard to me, from everything I followed, that engineering was enough for Pedro's thirst for life.

The encounters were based on intergenerational friendships, but one thing I always noticed: nothing resonated existentially in this putative author like music and its contemporary context.

Pedro Magalhães has always sought the divergent in contemporaneity: the universe of tuning is an escape from reality that this author was able to witness as a vehicle for individual affirmations in a universe where nothing stands out.

Energy. Energy of the people. This is the great bourgeois fear. They want us to identify ourselves, but when something suddenly appears that escapes the expectable universe, a whole universe goes into meltdown.

Contrary to this well-being, many artistic forms have asserted themselves: music will be one of the most effective - a famous poet will reach a few thousand, a musician will reach a few million...(Bob Dylan won a Nobel for music or poetry?)...

Energy...

Andy Warhol, regarding the first Velvet Underground concerts and their EPI: if they can stand ten minutes, then we play for fifteen. That's our policy. We want them to always want less.

It all comes down to that: energy. Against the bureaucratic ghosts masquerading in contemporary artists and cultural producers, oppose some kind of energy. I feel sorry for everyone who lacks poetry. I am sorry to all those who lack innocence. I feel sorry for all those who for over forty years of democracy have not been able to distinguish between life and career projection. This is what defines our country, unfortunately.

Pedro Magalhães is a diver in the recent memory of what defines us. And if it doesn't define us, forgive me dear reader, leave me here with no hard feelings. If you don't understand what music in the last fifty years has helped define the contexts of the fine arts, then leave the room.

If you don't understand how someone gives up a comfortable life to devote to what has brought him permanently together, then drop what you are reading.

Pedro Magalhães decided to take the plunge: thousands of hours of moving images, thousands of newspaper pages. All to find himself. Whether we want to be witnesses of this process or not, let's not leave aside that concept, always: energy!

Between abstract expressionism - we all remember Jackson Pollock -, and Kurt Cobain's fall on the batteries he destroyed at the end of concerts,Pedro Magalhães pays a singular and vehement tribute to Rock'n'Roll... destroy all monsters...

"HIDDEN TRACK (Graphic Scores #1-#108)" is the possibility of an improbable transcription of the concept of energy: a putative musical staff drifts on the soundtrack of the Evols, who interpret it somewhere between Glenn Branca's "Lessons for Guitar" and the shoegazing tergiversations of My Bloody Valentine, among others.

Music for not understanding what music is, and in that jolt we wake up to a better reality.

Peter is an embodiment of stories. Some will say they know this story. To those I say, with the utmost sincerity; live it, pass it on, because it is about art, about paying homage, about recreating and creating moments of suspension of the present.

Because this is what life is about: Patti Smith went to a concert of The Doors, looked at Jim Morrison, and finding him a bit clownish - too full of himself - thought that one day she would like to have his presence on a stage; Patti Smith sang for the first time in a context where only poetry was being recited. It electrified the thing. To the astonishment of many.

Lou Reed wanted to be a writer. He was given electric shocks as a teenager because his parents thought the kid was weird. He got his revenge with the Velvet Underground and, above all, with "Metal Machine Music" in 1975. You want electrostatic frequencies or whatever, take this.

Pedro Magalhães assumes time as a perception of the present. Some, with time and patience, may also assume it: because it is not exclusively a question of aesthetics...so many misconceptions are out there.

Energy...as we all once in our lives have felt, lived...or not.

Twenty years from now we will talk.
