CARELESS REEF (HRG), Netherlands, 2003. Four screens DVD installlation. (included in Work in Progress' section of the 12th Festival Internacional de Curtas Metragens de Vila do Conde, from 3rd July to 15th August of 2004)
Gerard Holthuis (b.1952) is a Dutch independent filmmaker and producer. He produced his own films and more than twenty films from other directors. Vila do Conde Film Festival presented his film “Hong Kong (HGK)” in 2000in the Internatinonal Competition and in 2003 Holthius returned to the Festival to make lectures on two of his works, Hong Kong and Careless Reef. The content of the work – films and installations – of this filmmaker/artist resists one-dimensional definitions. His films exist as a chain of intriguing, poetic pictures. His installations, where coloured fluorescents arranged in a tight pattern slowly contract (“#31 RGB” with Joost Rekveld), consistently achieve a new way of seeing for the spectator. Gerard Holthuis combines picture, environment and colour in an intuitive manner and creates his own reality. He leads you to a world recognizable from movies or TV programs, however you never saw that world in this way; in that combination and in that sequence. He gives us a beautifull framework that virtually comes from that reality, similar to a dreamed reality.

“My field of interest is to analyse and question the phenomenon of cinema, its various elements, its influence and conventional rules. My work is a reflection on the grammar of cinema and the relation between visual art and the cinematic experience.” A serie of three mirror-image video films about love and it’s sorrow, narcissism and loss. The work of the Belgian Nicolas Provost balances between fiction and fine arts, the grotesque and the moving, beauty and cruelty and it intends to walk in the fine line between dualities. Time and again his phantasmagorias provoque both recognition and alienation and succeed in catching our expectations into an unravelling game of mystery and abstraction. In some videos filmic memory is stimulated by short fragments of cinema (classic, contemporary and from B-films) and also from thematic platitudes. With manipulations of time and form, cinematographic and narrative language is analysed, accents are shifted and new stories are told. The extraordinary is elucidated in order to reveal the global. Apart from the use of film and visual language, sound is also a constant factor in Provost’s body of work, as a rhythmical spine or an emotional guideline.
2004 - 3 - Sérgio Tréfaut
Film still from New Lisboners
Sérgio Tréfaut
NOVOS LISBOETAS (New Lisboners), Portugal, 2003. Two simultaneous DVD projections, side by side, Doc, 30’, Col. (included in Work in Progress' section of the 12th Festival Internacional de Curtas Metragens de Vila do Conde, from 3rd July to 15th August of 2004)
Sérgio Tréfaut was born in Brazil in 1965. He has an MA in Philosophy from Paris I University (Sorbonne) and began his career as a journalist in Lisbon. Since he has devoted himself to cinema, both as a director and producer. “The miscegenation process always fascinated me. Maybe because I have myself three passports, but not only for that. I’ve been always attracted by mixed races, by the confluence of different rhythms and styles in a certain type of music, by several foreign ingredients in the same national dish, by words of different and distant origin in the same language. When you move to another country you start changing identity. But you also participate in the changes of the place where you go to. I proposed myself to portray in this installation the arrival of new cultures in Portugal: the first impressions of the new immigrants wave. People from various origins that are not integrated yet – but we already know they are going to enrich and change this country.

ANDY WARHOL'S EXPLODING PLASTIC INEVITABLE, USA, 1966. Three screens DVD installlation, 22'; Col (included on the 12th Festival Internacional de Curtas Metragens de Vila do Conde, from 3rd July to 15th August of 2004)
Andy Warhol, well known for his po paintings, also created significant works in film as well as the use of film projected as a three-dimensional environment. His work in multiple projection culminated in the multimedia environment entitled "The Exploding Plastic Inevitable". Every night during a one week period in 1966, film-maker Ronald Nameth filmed the "EPI", to make a comprehensive recording of the event. His film is now the only extensive motion picture document of "EM". Nameth edited versions for both single screen projection as well as for a 4 -screen video isntallation that recreates the spatial experience of the "EPf". Watching this film is like dancing in a strobe room: time stops, motion retards, the body seems separated from the mind. The screen bleeds into the walls and into the seats. Flak bursts of fiery color explode with slow fury. Staccato strobe guns stitch galaxies of silverfish over slow motion, stopmotion close-ups of the dancer's dazes ecstatic faces.

JANSKE:GUITAR, Netherlands, 2003. DVD installlation, Col. (included on the 12th Festival Internacional de Curtas Metragens de Vila do Conde, from 3rd July to 15th August of 2004)
Born in Veghel, Netherlands, in 1972. He has studied in the 2nd Fase Free Art, St. Joost, Breda (1998-1999) and in the Art academy St. Joost (photography), in 1994-1998. Lives in Rotterdam. Jan Adriaans has been presenting works in several solo and group exhibition all over Europe (especially in Netherlands).
Janske: guitar is a video-installation about my mother who's practising guitar at the attic of her house. Very concentrated, she's trying to get the cords rigth. With her repeating sound she fills the space ad makes it hers. Her eager to learn and her attemps to get control of the electric equipment are essential. At the same time its a flashback on time when I was living in my parents house and was jamming in my room every day after school."
