When we started the Solar project, we mentioned that one of the priorities of this Cinematic Art Gallery would be to give, to Vila do Conde and Portugal, a permanent space for exhibition and presentation of film-makers and artists, both Portuguese and international, whose work manifested a strong link to cinema. This became clear with the two first exhibitions: Revisitations by Matthias Mueller and Christoph Girardet and Dissolution Film Portraits by Siegfried Fruhauf and Manon de Boer. We intend to keep developing this direction in programming future exhibitions, however, if on one hand we intend to develop this project coherently through a certain uniqueness, on the other, we feel that by narrowing the gallery's agenda to the territory of the border between cinema and plastic arts, we may eventually enter a ghetto that may somehow limit our audience and the relationship with the artists and the art world. This can also limit the adaptability and the evolutionary capacity of the project. The Solar Gallery, as the Vila do Conde International Short Film Festival, aims to be a space for experimentation and development of transversal projects, where multiple areas of artistic expression can cross. It was this aspect that interests us in the work that has been developed by the Austrian Lia and the Portuguese Pedro Tudela and Miguel Carvalhais. In our opinion, besides its quality, the @c + Lia project has unique characteristics in the Portuguese scene. The exemplary exploration of the relation between sound and image are to us of special importance in the current context of artistic phenomena connected to digital arts. Over the last few years we have developed some individual and collective partnerships with the artists (through the Short Film Festival) and this greatly contributed to the genesis of the presentation of this new project at Solar. The 30x1 installation was a project that Lia, Pedro Tudela and Miguel Carvalhais started to develop in 2005 and that a series of coincidences connected with the specificity of the public arts funding of the Portuguese Instituto das Artes, and with the opening of this space, lead to program its world premiere in Solar. Therefore, the artists prepared 30x1 over four months, specifically thinking about the adaptation to the space of Solar. It was very meaningful for us to be able to premiere 30x1 (being this out first exhibition with Portuguese artists), as well as to be able to present, as a complement to the exhibition, a performance by @c + Lia, in which they used part of the material developed for this piece and that took place on the 10th of September at the Auditório Municipal of Vila do Conde.
