M. de Boer & S. Fruhauf - 1 - 13th Curtas Vila do Conde
SYLVIA KRISTEL - PARIS Manon de Boer, 2003
13th Curtas Vila do Conde
This exhibition at Solar was part of the 13th Curtas Vila do Conde programme, in the Work in Progress section, dedicated to the diversified work by two directors who have participated in previous Festival's competitions. Siegfried Fruhauf, from Austria, and Manon de Boer, from Belgium, are the artists and filmmakers who currently develop a project on possible integration of their own films and installations in the physical space of the Solar venue, which inhabited the place from the Festival's opening till the end of August.
We invited the Dutch artist Manon de Boer and the Austrian director Siegfried Fruhauf for a consistent show of their work universes: Boer's portraits and Fruhausf?s film as memory and also as matter. Born in 1976 in Austria, Siegfried Fruhauf works mostly in the field of experimental cinema. With extraordinary verve, Fruhauf has made a name for himself in contemporary Austrian filmmaking in only a few short years. Fruhauf not only carries on the fertile tradition of avant-garde filmmakers from Upper Austria (Kubelka, Export, Weibel and Brehm, to name but a few), he has also succeeded in discovering an approach to "structural" filmmaking which never fails to surprise. S. Fruhauf is used to film festivals with his films being presented at some of the most reputed events such as Cannes and Venice. His recent video installations have been shown in Austria and Switzerland and are starting to attract attention in the European art scene. Born in 1966 in India, Dutch director Manon de Boer has been developing a series of projects and installations in recent years which have been shown in Belgium and Holland and collectively in Europe. Her work lives off the exploration of portrait as an element connected with memory. With an obsessive fascination for filming the human face, her work assumes an autobiographical character where the screen works as a mirror. For the last nine years, Manon de Boer?s work has been regularly presented in such important exhibition venues as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Galerie Jan Mot in Brussels. More recently, she directed the short "Silvia Kristel", her first incursion in documentary, which was in competition here last year and shown in high profile films festivals such as the Hong Kong Film Festival, FICD Marseille and the Rotterdam Film Festival. The idea of juxtaposing the work of two auteurs, seemingly formally and aesthetically unrelated, who somehow intersect each other?s career paths on opposite directions, served as a starting point for the development of the concept for this exhibition. Each artist was given a distinct space in the gallery separated by a corridor which works as a physical and conceptual border between the work presented. The display was devised by the auteurs without previous knowledge of what each one had in mind. Dissolution Film Portraits included some of the most recent work by both auteurs as well as new work or new forms of presentation for installations that already existed. Film Dissolution consisted of new pieces conceived by Siegfried Fruhauf for an exhibition context, where the artist approached the focal point of his body of work, film as matter or element where memory dissolves itself. Film Portraits included a set of work where Manon developed a series of reflections about the face, the voice and the memory as a form of portrait and autobiographical element. We would like to highlight in particular the premiere of Time Lapse and Exposed (installation version) by S. Fruhauf, and Annemiek, by M. de Boer, work that was purposely conceived for Solar.
