Within the framework of the Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster retrospective, this video installation showed us another face of the artist's work exploring contiguous territories to visual arts. This work, based on the preparation of the shooting of Riyo, was presented in a different context in which the trilogy is usually shown (Riyo/Central/Plages). "During the entire car journey that took us from Russia to the extremities of the Western Europe. I searched for something in the eyes of all the people I met which sprang from joy, happiness and consolation. But I only found what I was looking for in two antique paintings..."A. Sokurov

THE DROWNING ROOM Ireland/U.S.A., 2000, Video (included in Work in Progress' section of the 10th Festival Internacional de Curtas Metragens de Vila do Conde, from 30th June to 7th July of 2003)
This film was shot entirely in a flooded shipping container. The container was reinforced and windows were cut into the sides to create natural lighting conditions. Sets and furniture were brought in via holes in the roof. The actors employ hidden air tanks and intense breath holding. Each one is wearing at least 12kg of lead to achieve authentic posture. The underwater conditions lead to unusual camera movements, a strange heaviness in the characters' performance, and a constant sense of air being used up - time running out.

PHANTOM, Germany, 2001 DVD-R, col, 04'36''. (included in Work in Progress' section of the 10th Festival Internacional de Curtas Metragens de Vila do Conde, from 30th June to 7th July of 2003)
"My fascination with curtains began in childhood whem I asked my parents for a spare room in our house in order to build a small theatre there; all I needed for this magic transformation was a curtain. Curtains are both meant for hiding and for most effectivelly exposing things, they frame expectationand curiosity, enlarging crucial moments of our lives that lead at last to the final curtain. Beyond the veil, there is a seduction of an unknown space, the hope of leaving."M.Müller A geography of shadows. Silhouettes that never quite take shape. Anaemic figures, seen in negative, forced to wander between narratives restlessly but caught in a loop which repeats without end. They are a living dead confined to a cinematic space they cannot leave. They are the secret that lies between stories.

SCRACHT , Germany, 2001 DVD-R, 04'45'' (included in Work in Progress' section of the 10th Festival Internacional de Curtas Metragens de Vila do Conde, from 30th June to 7th July of 2003)
"The structure of the film which at first sight seems reduced, strict, generates a precise, rich perception of the materiality of vinyl and celluloid. Image, montage and rhythm condense into a both abstract and sensual treatise on difference and repetition, film history and the phenomenon of disappearance."C.Girardet A montage of record players and gramophones from various films. Original sound has been replaced by the sound of scratches, similar to grooves in unplayed records. Single rotations of the records are repeated over and over and the barely perceptible cuts create skips on the records (which not appear in the original version). The record player's almost identical number of rotations creates a rhythmic structure, the total lenght of the piece corresponds to the average lenght of a piece of music.
